Kennel Cough is one of the leading causes of death in dogs. Kennel cough goes by the scientific name tracheobronchitis. It’s a very contagious upper respiratory illness that can quickly move through a kennel. It’s a deadly illness that can be difficult to treat, if not dealt with early. Kennel Cough is spread from dog to dog by coughing and sneezing. In a closed and close environment like a kennel, this disease can spread very rapidly.

Coughing is also a common issue among people, young or old. But when it comes to dogs, it is called kennel cough. This is a common problem in the world of dog health, but why the name? The name itself originated from how dogs in the same kennel can quickly acquire an infection. When this happens, inflammation on the upper respiratory system occurs to the dogs. As for other dogs inside the kennel, they also can easily catch the same virus and bacteria simply through the airborne droplets from the initially infected dog.

Most cases of dog kennel cough are mild and do not change the dog’s overall health or physical condition. The cough though can be irritating to the dog as it is persistent and the dog will cough every few minutes throughout the day. The use of antibiotics can be used to quicken the healing process but in the majority of cases most dogs will recover without it. Kennel cough can last up to three weeks

Dogs are man’s best friend. A family dog is always considered a member of the family. It’s important to learn more about your dog’s health issues. Knowledge is power and knowledge of the illnesses that could affect your dog means that you can take the precautions needed to keep your dog healthy.

There are some coughs which are similar to kennel cough that can b caused by other serious respiratory diseases, so it is important that the dog be examined by a vet. You can also prevent kennel cough by having your dog vaccinated against these infectious germs. Dogs that are not in frequent contact with other dogs have a reduced chance of getting kennel cough. If taking your dog to a show or having it bordered ensure that the dog is vaccinated a few week before hand to prevent from catching the disease.

Dog diabetes can become a serious disease if not diagnosed and treated early. Complications at a later time can include nerve damage as well as blindness. A veterinarian can prescribe medications that can stabalize the disease and help your dog live a more normal life. Injections are one method of treatment, or a course of tablets depending on the seriousness of the disease.

You need to feed them on a regular basis. You also need to make sure that they are eating healthy food. You don’t want them eating something that is bad for them. You need to keep them clean. This means giving them a bath and even brushing their teeth. You can give them a dog treat that will clean their teeth if you don’t want to brush them but you will still have to give them a bath.

While your dog stays in hospital it will be important for your vet to monitor your dog’s reaction to the insulin injections so that the correct dosage can be decided upon. When this has been determined you will be able to monitor your dog at home by testing his urine and/or blood.

You also need to make sure that they get whatever medicine, such as flea medicine that they need as well as any shots that they need. This is to keep them healthy. So you will have to take them to the vet to make sure they are well taken care of.

Giving your dog a shot of insulin can cause blood sugar to drop (hypoglycemia). Your canine may start to shake. Keep a small container of Karo syrup or honey on hand. Rub on his gums until he stops shaking. If this happens, head to the vet immediately.

Osteoarthritis or Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is a progressive condition in which the cartilage in the joint is slowly broken down, and bony changes occur. Any dog with a developmental or congenital joint problem, like dysplasia or patella luxation, is more prone to developing osteoarthritis. Dogs who have had injury to a joint such as a fracture involving the joint or a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in the knee will be also more likely to develop DJD.

These are the types of arthritis that plague dogs. Osteoarthritis; Degenerative Joint Disease; Hip Dysplasia; Elbow Dysplasia; Knee (stifle joint); Osteochrondrosis; Hypertrophic Arthritis; Shoulder Degeneration; Wrist Arthritis; Kneecap Dislocation

There are some recommended commercial brands to help relieve arthritis in dogs. Hill’s (Rx/d) and Purina (JM Joint Mobility) are formulas made for this purpose. The most important joint supplements have been added to the dog food. If you decide to give your dog supplements instead, then go for the weight control formula because that will help his joints too.

It is hard to watch your old friend limp and whimper when he or she walks. Pay attention to his movements and his behavior. Your dog will let you know when the joints are hurting, but only you can help them out and give them the relief they need. With the right medications your dog will not be as good as new, but they will feel less pain.

Arthritis doesn’t have to slow your dog down, take steps when they’re younger to prevent the irreversible damaged caused by arthritis.

Dog separation anxiety is a real problem for many dogs and their owners. Some dogs will bark incessantly when you leave, while others will destroy items in your home as a result of their anxiety. Dog separation anxiety can range from mild to extreme, but there are measures you can take to help alleviate dog separation anxiety. Many holistic remedies can be very effective.

One way to reduce separation anxiety is to avoid fawning over your dog when you arrive and depart from your residence. A dog will experience separation anxiety when he is used to constant attention. Perpetually providing a dog with constant attention as you come and go will make the dog upset when your return is delayed. So, reducing some of this attention will make any separations easier for the dog to handle. Also, walking in and out the door in short intervals will teach your dog that when you leave, you will invariable come back. When you mix a few of these “pretend” departures and arrivals into your regular routine the dog will slowly become less anxious. Mainly, this is because the dog will begin to understand when you leave it is not forever.

Positive indications of separation anxiety are bad behavior primarily when your dog is left alone, he follows you everywhere you go, he becomes overexcited when you return home, he becomes excited or depressed when you prepare to leave home, or if he dislikes being alone out of doors.

Separation anxiety is not due to disobedience or lack of training. It is an instinctive behavior and should not be punished. The key to treating this problem is to gradually train or condition your dog to get used to your absence. When you leave home or return home make it a low key event.

Kava kava has also been used by many people in the treatment of dog separation anxiety. It is safe for use in humans, but there are not enough studies to indicate whether or not kava kava is safe for use in dogs. For this reason, proceed with caution if you do decide to use kava kava treatments for dog separation anxiety.

Dog skin problems can wreck havoc on your dog?s skin and on your nerves. Watching your beloved dog scratch, lick and chew on themselves in obvious pain and discomfort can be heartbreaking. In this short article, we will take a closer look at common dog skin problems and then I will direct you to some resources that will help you solve common, dog skin problems.

It certainly is a worry when your dog spends most of their time scratching, itching and licking themselves to try and get rid of the annoying tingly burning sensation they are feeling, when all it’s doing is making it worse for them. There is no way to make it better for them but taking them to the vet and seeing what the skin problem is.

One dog skin problem that most owners are familiar with, is seasonal, environmental and dietary allergies. Food allergies can occur when you introduce a new type of food or diet plan to your dog or when he/she has simply built up an intolerance to foods that they have normally tolerated very well.

Allergies in dogs are often times only seasonal. Simply being observant will clue you in to the time of year your dog suffers from allergies the most. During these seasons, simply be proactive. Visit your veterinarian and come up with a plan to combat whatever your dog is allergic to, before your dog begins having problems.

Bacterial and fungal skin infections are last on this list of common skin problems for dogs these can be found by either loss of hair in areas of your dogs’ body with dry skin in the center and a general soar look to the skin, or by ulcer like patches on your dogs skin also looking soar and painful.

by Ray Lam

If you have a dog you know how important flea medicine is for your animal. There are many types of flea treatment for pets that you can use. Most people use the products that are recommended to them by the vet. Some of the products that vets recommend are Advantage, Revolution and Frontline. However, these may not be the right ones for you to use with your dog, and with the dog fleas that bother them. The flea medicine that you choose should be something that you feel comfortable using.

Treating fleas on your pet with flea medication can require a multifaceted approach if you want to see all of the fleas gone on a permanent basis. In fact, the word “permanent” when used to describe a flea infestation is a relevant term. This is because, in most instances a dog or cat owner will never rid their pet of fleas permanently.

What they can reasonably expect though, is long periods when there will be no fleas on their pet, interspersed with periods of treatments to eradicate them. A flea collar will help to keep fleas at bay but it won’t completely eradicate them. This is why a flea collar is recommended but it should be used in conjunction with other treatments.

In the case of a cat, the situation is yet more knotty since cats are self willed individuals and attempts to shampoo an animal who hates it turns things pretty nasty. By the time you are done with it, your arms may be covered with blood due to the sundry scratches that the desperate cat has surely inflicted. Besides, most of the so-called tick shampoos are irritating both for the pet’s skin as well as that of yours. And in any case, they leave a lackluster effect on the pet’s fur, making it look lifeless and dull. Whereas a few drops of Flea medicine does away with all that, yet ridding the pest enduringly and well.

Remember that some flea medications kill the flea while others work to interrupt the life cycle. Use whichever one works best for your situation or use both when in doubt. Start prevention treatments early, as to stop the fleas from spreading. The earlier you start the easier it will be to eliminate or stop an infestation. Buy a flea collar that will prevent eggs from hatching. If you find that your dog is scratching herself profusely, take action now before the situation gets out of control. Consider a liquid medicine if your dog has trouble with oral medications. You can mix this in their water if necessary.

Advantage flea and tick medicine is different from all other brands of flea products available in pet stores. Advantage’s active ingredients do not cause skin irritation in most pets. When your pet is suffering from flea bites, the last thing you want to do is cause additional skin irritation because of the cheaper, lesser quality products available.

by Michelle Adams

Just as we all know that there are serious health problems such as high blood pressure, stress on the organs, and weight gain from a poor dietthe same is true for our pets. Beagle nutrition must be looked at more carefully when you are selecting what you will and will not allow your precious pup to eat. There is a huge list of painful and costly medical problems that can arise if your Beagle is not given a proper diet filled with a well-balanced mix of vitamins.

One of the biggest problems arising from a poor diet for a dog is that of being overweight. The proper diet and the right balance and nutrients and vitamins can help reduce that risk significantly. Your Beagle does not have the voice to tell you that they need a proper diet so you have to take action and make sure they get what they need so they are not left suffering later for what you lacked when making their dinner choices.

The best diet to use in order to provide the best Beagle nutrition would be what your pet’s vet selects. If you have ever really paid attention in the pet food section of your local store, you would have noticed that there are so many different kinds of food available. While all seem to be offering many wonderful things, you must know what is needed for your dog and which food actually gives it.

With all of the different kinds of dog food being offered, it can be extremely confusing to pick one. Without help from some who has studied these animals, you may be selecting the wrong diet for your loved pet. Some pet store dog foods do offer everything your Beagle needs but without knowing first what they need, you will not be able to find it on your own.

You can trust your vet to know what is best for Beagle nutrition so take their advice and see how your dog does.

So in the end, if you desire a well-balanced diet for proper Beagle nutrition, you need to search for information, which is most often found through your vet. And while on the subject, you should discuss treat options for your Beagle. Table food should never be an option as the fat content is too high for their systems. This is often the leading cause in Beagle’s becoming obese even though all the owner was trying to do was show them love.

There are many Beagle dog food recipes out there that can supply you with easy to make treats that your dog will love. These home made recipes often times resemble human food and will allow your dog to think they are getting table food while keeping them within their good diet guidelines.

Your Beagle would thank you if he or she could, but while they can’t verbally express it, years of your Beagle’s love will show it.

Your dog deserves a healthy pet food. Unfortunately, whether purchased in a grocery store, pet store, or veterinarian’s office, pet food may contain animal by-products. While many laws exist to regulate our food, the same assurances do not exist for pet food.

Animal by-products may also be known as rendered meat. These are meats from animals considered unsuitable for human consumption, but are found in all pet foods, from store brands to name brand products. If you wouldn’t want to eat rendered meat, why would you feed it to your pet?

Meat from animal by-products may have been taken from animals that were brought to the slaughterhouse dead, animals that were too sick to be given to humans, or animals that were diseased. If these meats had the ability to make people sick, why would it be any different for your dog? Another fact is that it can even mean cats, dogs, horses or other similar animals that were euthanized could have made there way into your pets food dish.

The source of meat is not the only problem in pet foods today. Preservatives commonly found in pet food, such as ethoxyquin, BHT, and BHA, are toxic. Better alternatives to keep your pet’s food fresh include Vitamins E and C.

Many people say that the ratio a dogas diet should contain is 50% vegetables, 40% meat, and about 10% grain or carbohydrates. Another thing to think about is you get what you pay for. Cheaper dog foods more often than not will have less quality ingredients then Healthy Dog Food does.

Holistic pet food is a better alternative. Holistic pet foods are both natural and nutritious. Ingredients are fit for consumption by both humans and dogs, and won’t contain chicken beaks or toxic preservatives. Instead, you’ll only find ingredients you yourself would enjoy.

The best way to know exactly what you are feeding your dog is to make the food yourself. Books are availabe which contain many delicious Healthy Dog Food recipes. Your veterinarian is also a great source for the vitamins and nutrients you pet needs.

Finally, remember not all human foods are safe for animals. Problem foods for dogs include: grapes and raisins, which can damage kidneys; mushrooms; raw, cooked or powdered garlic and onions, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia; raw fish, which on a regular basis may lead to thiamine deficiency, and cause loss of appetite, seizures, and death. Ask you veterinarian whenever you are unsure if a new food is safe for you pet.

After making the decision to get a new Yorkshire Terrier the next thing you are going to want to do is to be able to spot a fake Yorkie breeder when you see one so that you can avoid doing any business with them at all. There are many things you can ask and things you can do to try and weed out the fake Yorkie breeders and it is in your best interest to do so as the relationship between you and your breeder is a very important one to the health of your pet.

Check with your local Better Business Bureau and see if there are any complaints registered against the particular Yorkie breeder you are considering doing business with. A breeder that has a long list of customer complaints is someone that does not run their business very well and is also probably not someone you want to wind up doing business with.

Part of the long-term relationship between you and your Yorkie breeder is the experienced advice a good breeder will offer on the care of your pet. To get that process started right a good breeder will make sure you leave with your dog and a set of detailed care instructions so you know exactly how to care for your dog and so you know exactly what it needs to be healthy. Be very wary of the breeder that does not offer these detailed care instructions.

Another sign of a good and reputable Yorkie breeder is that they will give you a sample of your dog’s food so that you know what to feed your dog to make it healthy and happy. A breeder that does not offer you a free sample of food is probably a fake Yorkie breeder and definitely not someone you want to deal with.

Many insurance companies see an opportunity with reputable Yorkie breeders to market pet insurance. For that reason you can usually expect to receive a free six-week pet insurance policy when you buy from a reputable Yorkie breede.

If you are not offered a free pet insurance policy, or the breeder you are talking to has never heard of such a thing, then the chances are that you may be dealing with a fake Yorkie breeder.

Your breeder is important to the future health and happiness of your dog and for that reason you need to make sure you take all the steps necessary to figure out if you are dealing with a reputable and legitimate breeder or a fake Yorkie breeder.

So take your time and do the necessary research and be prepared to ask all the questions you need in order to help you make this very important decision.

It is an extremely annoying situation when a dog jumps at your clean clothes when you are taking a walk in your neighborhood. Or When your front yard is the chosen venue for the next door dog to leave his many calling cards, this is also frustrating. Are these bad dogs? No, they are not any worse than the neighbor’s out of control kids. What is wrong with the kids or the pet when the concerned adults are not doing their duties?

The dog must be taught to behave within some set parameters when around people. Ask any smart owner and he would tell you that it is wise to take the help of a dog trainer to learn the handling methods without dampening his natural spirits. Ask the help of your veterinary surgeon or pet store to locate trainers who conduct private or group sessions; alternatively you could go online and take the help of an online course.

This training could teach owners how to be in command of their pets. At times, trainers will admit it’s easier to train the dog than the owner! Dogs that must be leash trained for walking in public or at the park need practice; this begins around the yard or in a smaller location. Barking is often a behavior that distresses owners and neighbors. Shouting or punishing your pet for engaging in this normal communication is counterproductive - as well as confusing to the animal.

Remember when the dog needs your attention, is hungry or thirsty, they will bark. A barking dog can also be a strong deterrent to burglars, so completely suppressing its bark might not be in your best interest. Many owners make the mistake of letting a puppy bark as they please but change their attitude when they grow older.

Any trainer can teach you skills on how to get the desired conduct from your puppy using the carrot as opposed to the stick You ought to reward your pet for good behavior then they will now exactly what they should not do in the future. Most importantly, don’t expect your dog to learn a behavior that’s contradictory to his breed. You should look into breeds that exhibit particular characteristics if you want them from your pet. When does a dog become good? Well, when you train them with patience, resolve and of course, a great deal of affection.
